Our Very Own Composer
What's the name of the song that's been stuck in your head lately?
You know, the one that keeps creeping up on you in each moment of silence, the one you keep humming to yourself as you go about your day?
Write down the title and artist of that song on a blank piece of paper.
If you've seen the film Inside Out from this past year, think back to that scene in the movie when the maintenance workers in Riley's long-term memory keep replaying the song "TripleDent Gum" in her head over and over again. (Watch the clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euwgRSt5Nrs)
I'm not too skilled at analogies, so bear with me, but I'm starting to think this is the way God works too.
Sometimes it seems as if God speaks to us by "replaying" the same thoughts in our heads over and over again. The first time we think it's just a coincidence. But then the thought doesn't seem to go away.
Lately, God keeps replaying a particular thought in my head over and over again.
I'm driving down the street, and the thought comes to me.
I'm in the middle of a brunch conversation with my parents, and the thought comes to me.
I'm mindlessly scrolling through Facebook, and the thought comes to me.
Again and again and again.
Like that song that's constantly stuck in your head - the one you wrote down on your once-blank piece of paper.
Lately, for me, the thought has been about love.
It's an idea that I just cant seem to get out of my head...
...the idea that if we just realize that we are really and truly and completely loved by God, then life doesn't seem so difficult anymore.
...the idea that if we just realize how much God loves us, then we can stop expecting or demanding so much love from other people.
Is there a thought that keeps replaying in your head over and over again lately?
Maybe it's God trying to tell you something.
How else do you think He answers our prayers?
I think so often God tries to speak to us in this way, but so rarely do we actually pay attention.
Refer back to your piece of paper.
If there's a thought that God seems to keep replaying over and over again in your head, write it down.
What do you think it means? What do you think He's trying to tell you?
Write that down too.
It's so important to measure our awareness of God's presence in our lives and pay attention to what He's trying to tell us.
Now look back to your piece of paper again.
Look back to the song title and artist's name that you wrote down at the beginning of this blog post.
Think of your life as a song.
You are the artist.
Think of God as the composer, the director, or whatever you want to call Him.
Can you imagine what a disaster it would be if the artist never listened to the composer?
If the artist performed whatever he or she wanted to on stage, and didn't refer at all to the song lyrics that were originally composed specifically for him or her?
Or if a group of musicians never listened to their conductor?
In the same way, we're headed for disaster if we don't listen to God.
We're head for disaster if we don't realize how much He loves us, and if we don't stop demanding so much love from other people.
Maybe you don't consider it a "disaster," per se. Maybe you just consider it "a life without God." Well, to me, there is nothing more disastrous than a life without God.
We are the artists. He is our very own composer.
His sweet and loving words to us are like the songs that are constantly stuck in our head.
The ones that constantly creep up on us day in and day out.
The ones we constantly try to ignore.
Well, my sweet dear listeners, it's time.
It is time we started listening.
